Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear revolves around a 15-year-old Yuna. One day, upon returning home, she is hyped for a new update for her favorite world’s first VRMMO, World Fantasy Online. Ever since the game service began one year ago, she quit going to school and just passed time doing absolutely nothing, but playing the game. After the server’s maintenance has been performed and a new update has become online, Yuna meets either a GM, or an NPC, telling her that all the players may receive a loot box and the reward will depend on how long they have been playing the game. Yuna receives a kuma costume, which she finds embarrassing at first, but later quickly forgets about that feeling, when she sees the stats of this costume, which are quite high. Having received the costume, she is also asked to take a survey: her attitude towards real life, her opinion on the game, if she believes in God and finally if she finds the kuma costume cute. Finally, she logs in the game and finds out that she wears that detestable kuma costume and receives a mail from some mysterious person. That person welcomes her in the new world, since she finds real life too boring. ‘Enjoy your life, wearing the costume, you do not like, in a world, in which you are sent by someone, you know nothing about.’ Things become complicated, when Yuna finds out that she is now not in a virtual reality, but rather in a real world.

In the realm of anime, every once in a while, a series emerges that gently nudges the boundaries of its genre, offering viewers a fresh perspective. “Majo no Tabitabi,” also known in English as “Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina,” is one such series. It debuted in 2020 and quickly caught the attention of anime fans worldwide. This show doesn’t just take you on a journey across fantastical landscapes; it delves deep into the human condition, exploring themes of happiness, sorrow, morality, and the consequences of one’s actions. Let’s explore what makes “Majo no Tabitabi” stand out in a sea of anime.

The Premise

At its core, “Majo no Tabitabi” follows the adventures of Elaina, a young and incredibly talented witch who decides to explore the world after reading about the adventures of her idol, Nike. Inspired, Elaina sets off on her broomstick, aiming to experience the wonders of the world firsthand. Unlike many other protagonists in fantasy anime, Elaina’s journey is not about defeating a great evil or uncovering hidden powers. It’s about exploration, personal growth, and the myriad encounters she has along the way.

Characters and Development

Elaina

Elaina stands out as a character because of her nuanced personality. She’s not just the stereotypical do-gooder; she’s curious, sometimes selfish, and often chooses to remain a bystander in the events unfolding around her. This approach to her character makes her feel more realistic and relatable. She reflects the complexity of real human emotions and decisions, making her journey all the more engaging.

Supporting Cast

The show introduces a diverse cast of characters in each episode, from witches and kings to commoners and mythical beings. Each character Elaina encounters has their own story, dreams, and struggles, which are often explored in touching detail, even within the confines of a single episode. This not only adds depth to the world of “Majo no Tabitabi” but also allows for a variety of stories and themes to be explored.

Themes and Storytelling

One of the most compelling aspects of “Majo no Tabitabi” is its approach to storytelling. The episodic nature of the series means that each episode can stand on its own, telling a complete story. These stories range from light-hearted and whimsical to dark and thought-provoking, often leaving the audience with something to ponder long after the episode ends.

Exploring the Human Condition

Through Elaina’s eyes, the series explores themes such as the consequences of one’s actions, the complexity of human emotions, and the idea that the world is not simply divided into good and evil. One episode might explore the joy of helping others, while another delves into the darker aspects of human nature. This variety in storytelling ensures that “Majo no Tabitabi” never feels repetitive or predictable.

Moral Ambiguity

A particularly intriguing aspect of the show is its willingness to explore moral ambiguity. Elaina often encounters situations where the line between right and wrong is blurred, and she sometimes chooses not to intervene. This has sparked some debate among viewers about the role of the protagonist and the message the series is trying to convey. However, it also adds a layer of realism to the show; in life, as in the series, the right choice isn’t always clear.

Visuals and Soundtrack

No discussion of “Majo no Tabitabi” would be complete without mentioning its visuals and soundtrack. The animation is beautifully done, with vibrant colors and detailed backgrounds that bring the fantastical world to life. Each location Elaina visits is distinct, with its own culture, architecture, and scenery, making her journey feel truly expansive.

The soundtrack, composed by AstroNoteS, complements the visuals perfectly, enhancing the atmosphere of each scene. From the upbeat opening theme to the more subdued and reflective background music, the soundtrack plays a key role in setting the tone of the series.

Reception and Impact

Since its release, “Majo no Tabitabi” has received a positive reception from both fans and critics. Its unique approach to storytelling, combined with its exploration of deeper themes, has set it apart from other fantasy anime. It has sparked discussions about the nature of storytelling, the role of the protagonist, and the complexity of moral choices.

Conclusion

“Majo no Tabitabi” is more than just a story about a witch traveling the world. It’s a series that challenges viewers to think, to question, and to empathize with characters from vastly different walks of life. It’s a reminder that the world is a complex and beautiful place, full of stories waiting to be told. Whether you’re a long-time fan of anime or someone looking for a series that offers something a little different, “Majo no Tabitabi” is definitely worth watching.
